St. Michael’s Hospital (SMH) Kidney Transplant Program provides world-class care to over 1800 kidney transplant patients (from 1 week to >50 years post-transplant) and performs an average of 150 new living and deceased donor kidney transplants per year.
Our team is made up of dedicated nephrologists, surgeons, nurses, pharmacists, social workers, educators, and scientists. In March 2023, we opened a new state-of-the art Transplant & Advanced Kidney Care Clinic to care for our patients. SMH now offers a one-year comprehensive fellowship program directed to highly qualified physicians who have completed their core Nephrology training and are seeking advanced training in kidney transplant.
The program offers trainees exposure to all aspects of clinical transplant care, from the pre-transplant evaluation, peri-transplant activity, and post-transplant management (including immunosuppression and complications following transplant). Trainees spend 6 months each on the inpatient service and in outpatient ambulatory care clinics. As part of the latter, they are exposed to living donor evaluation and acceptance and the breadth of options to bring these donor transplants to fruition (direct, paired exchange, ABO incompatible donation, list exchange).
The fellowship also has exposure to transplant relevant interventional procedures, and dedicated rotations in pathology, transplant immunology and infectious disease. We have a formal educational curriculum with didactic teaching and journal clubs to review the latest literature in transplant medicine. This new fellowship program is currently under review for accreditation by the American Society of Transplantation. The fellowship program is an open competition with candidates selected based on merit. If you are interested in applying, please click APPLY NOW.
